Newport RI, US - July 7, 1972. French navigator Alain Colas aboard his trimaran Pen Duick IV (previously owned by sailing legend Éric Tabarly) winning the 1972 Transat Plymouth-Newport race. Alain Colas (September 16, 1943 - November 16, 1978) was the first sailor to complete a solitary round the world race in a multihull and endeavored to complete the 1978 Route du Rhum, however disappeared in the Atlantic after passing Azores.
