On February 4, 1976, Guatemala was struck by a major 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which contributed to the death toll of 23.000 and about 80.000 wounded. It happened during the night and most adobe type houses in mountain villages collapsed. The fact that roads and railroads were cut, prevented the relief teams from arriving quickly.
