On February 4, 1976, Guatemala was struck by a major 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which contributed to the high death toll of 23.000 and about 80.000 wounded. It happened during the night and most adobe type houses in mountain villages collapsed. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their home and they had to live outside in camps for many months.
